One Big Love Fest

Snipers on the Ready

My husband and I took our son to participate in the inauguration festivities, of which there were many in the nation’s capitol. It was surreal being in the city that felt more like Mardi Gras, without the drunkenness, than the city that is the epicenter of power. What can I say about this weekend? The balls are highly overrated, the cold unbearable, the logistics of getting around the city nearly impossble, but still, well, it was as if we had been part of something momentous, something so huge that would permit us bragging rights for a long long time. Since we missed Woodstock, that mythical event of drugs, music, and love, well, we finally got our one shot at such a mammoth happening where we actually participated rather than learned of its particulars through the grainy images.

What was most striking about the weekend was not just the sheer volume of people, but the mood of those who had braved all the travails of getting to the city. It was as if the entire two or so million that had descended on the city had taken a healthy dose of Xanax or some other prescription that helps alleviate anxiety and helps foster a sense of ebullience. A friend of a friend described being at the mall among the thousands as a worshipful event. I thought her description beautiful and even more moving than the images televised.

Since our son is young, we simply attended a private party at a location directly across from the White House. Being on the 12th floor permitted us a great view of all the snipers, which we all found morbidly fascinating. Needless to say, I have many pictures of these snipers, probably more than any of the President and the First Lady.

So, it is, a new President, a new First family, and a new day for our nation.
